Derived from the seed husks of Plantago ovata, psyllium has been a trusted digestive remedy for over 2,000 years, woven through Ayurvedic and Unani medicine across India and the Middle East before becoming a staple of Western wellness in the 20th century. Known for its ability to absorb water and form a soothing gel, psyllium carries one of the rare FDA-recognized health claims in the supplement world  a testament to decades of clinical research behind its benefits.

Root-Cause Approach This botanical is best used strategically when dietary fibre intake is inadequate, or during specific therapeutic protocols, while working toward improving whole-food fibre intake over time. It is intended as an adjunct, not a replacement, for appropriate medical care.

What It Supports

  • Cholesterol Balance: Clinical studies suggest psyllium may help lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol as part of a heart-healthy diet.

  • Digestive Regularity: A gentle, natural bulk-forming fibre that supports regular, comfortable bowel movements.

  • Blood Sugar Support: May help slow digestion to support healthy post-meal blood sugar levels.

  • Fullness & Mindful Eating: Forms a gel that may help support feelings of fullness between meals.

Who This Is For

  • Those wanting to support already-healthy cholesterol levels naturally

  • Individuals experiencing occasional constipation or irregularity

  • Those seeking steady, balanced blood sugar support

  • Individuals looking for a gentle way to feel fuller and curb mindless snacking

Who Should Not Take This

  • Anyone with a known allergy or previous adverse reaction to psyllium

  • Individuals with a previous bowel obstruction, severe gastrointestinal narrowing, difficulty swallowing, or previous faecal impaction

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, unless advised by a healthcare provider

  • Individuals taking medications that may interact (take medications at least 2 hours before or after psyllium)

  • Consult a healthcare professional before use if you have a chronic medical condition or take prescription medications

How to Take

  • Starting Dose: ½ teaspoon (approximately 2.5 g) once daily, mixed with at least 250 mL of water.

  • Target Dose: Gradually increase to 1 teaspoon (approximately 5 g) once or twice daily, as tolerated.

  • Additional Note: Always consume with adequate water and follow with an additional glass of water. Gradual introduction may minimise bloating and gas. Take medications at least two hours before or after psyllium.

Ancient Roots of Psyllium Husk

Psyllium has ancient roots going back over 2,000 years, originating from the Plantago ovata plant native to India, Pakistan, and the Mediterranean region, particularly Iran. Ancient Ayurvedic and Unani medicine systems in India used psyllium husk (known as "Isabgol") as a traditional remedy for digestive complaints, valued for its soothing and cleansing properties. Ancient Egyptian and Persian traditions also referenced plantain-family seeds for similar restorative purposes, using them in early herbal preparations
